But today was different. A high-profile murder case file lay on her desk. Her editor looked at her and said,
“Anaya, this one’s yours. The first name on the suspect list… Kabir Khan.”

The file nearly slipped from her hands. Her breath caught in her throat.

Six Years Ago

Lucknow University—Journalism Department

Anaya had entered college with big dreams. She wore glasses and a quiet confidence that made her presence feel real. There were many people in her life, but Kabir… he was different.

One day at a college fest, Kabir held a camera and looked straight at her.
“You don’t look good in pictures… The picture looks beautiful because you’re in it.”

That one line changed something in her.

Friendship turned to love. And that love deepened with every passing day.

Kabir came from a modest background, but his thinking was that of a king. Journalism was his passion too, but there was something else in his eyes—some secret, some pain, something incomplete.

Then what happened?

Anaya and Kabir’s engagement had been fixed. Their families had agreed. Everything was like a dream.

Ten days before the wedding… Kabir disappeared.
No calls. No messages. Just a letter:

“Anaya, forgive me. I don’t deserve you. I’m leaving. Stay happy.”

Anaya picked up the file again. Kabir Khan—once a name that meant everything to her, was now a murder suspect.

The case details said:

Victim: Ayra Kapoor—social media influencer, age 27
Murder Location: Gurugram apartment, 10th floor
Suspect: Kabir Khan, Ayra’s live-in partner
Cause of Death: Poisoning, no signs of forced entry
Time of Death: 2:15 AM

Anaya’s mind reeled.
Kabir loved someone else? He lived with another woman?
And now… was he a killer?

She picked up her phone and scheduled a meeting with ACP Mishra of the Crime Branch.

Crime Branch Office—The Next Day

“ACP Mishra, I’m Anaya. I’m covering the Ayra Kapoor murder case.”

He looked up slowly and replied, “Do you want information or the truth?”

Anaya: “The truth. No matter what.”

ACP Mishra:
“Then listen. Kabir Khan reported the murder himself. He said he found Ayra dead in the morning. But there were no signs of a break-in. The CCTV was off that night. Poison was found in her coffee mug.”

Anaya asked, “And the motive?”

He looked her straight in the eyes.
“Love triangle. Ayra was having an affair with someone else. Kabir was insecure. But… we still don’t have any solid evidence.”

An Old Photograph

Back home, Anaya opened an old diary. Inside was a photo of her and Kabir.

On the back, she had written:

“If someone truly loves you, they never walk away.”

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

Suddenly, a message popped up on her phone:
Private Number: “I knew you’d come back, Anaya.”

Her heart stopped for a moment.
Kabir…?
